resolve

Some folks believe the tradition of making a new year’s resolution goes back to Roman times. The Roman god Janus has a face on both sides of his head, Professor Quirrell style, thus able to look forward and back at the same time.

In a similar way, resolutions are a chance to look back at how we did and look forward to ways to improve in the coming times.

How about a resolution to learn an old skill this year? Maybe you’ll save money or time, or maybe you’ll simply feel more self-reliant.

The Damsel would love to hear about any of your attempts, successful or not so. After all, just trying is a step forward. 2010 is the year.

My old skill, I will be doing a lot of sewing for a fundraiser we have coming up in April. I have not used a sewing machine in over 18 years. I know that because the last thing I sewed was before I gave birth to my oldest boy Marley. I swore never to be one of those moms that would sew embarrassing outfits for my boy. I just didn’t think I would be so fanatical about it = P

I was delighted to receive a pressure canner for Christmas this year. I have never used a pressure cooker/canner before, and (if I’m being honest) they frighten me a little bit. But I’m determined to learn how to use it so I can further my home preserving skills.

I also am determined to learn to make clothes this year. I have never made anything from a pattern, other than a quilt. Patterns, with their many tissue paper pieces, intimidate me. But I’m sure it will be easy once I actually sit down and do it. It’s not like I have to make a wedding dress or something on my first try.

    Happy New Year, Damsel!

Sounds great! Pressure canners seem scary but you will love it. And sewing…yes…baby steps…no wedding dresses for at least a month, okay?
Hey, I’m curious…are you emailed my replies to you, or do you have to come back to my site to see them?

My husband has resolved to learn a new skill this year…he has decided to learn how to sew! Darn him for always doing all of the “distaff” work better than me! :) I guess I’ll just go shovel some snow!

  4. This is the 2nd reminder I’ve had in the last week to bring it back to old school, that is, to focus on a survival/basic skill that would be useful in times of need.

I’d like to teach my little ones more about making meals from scratch this year. I get busy and single minded in my kitchen, but this is a good reminder to keep the kids involved, too. We learn best when we do.

My resolution to be healthier actually indirectly means I will be trying to learn some “old” skills. Because healthy eating means going back to basics. Not sure what new “old” skills I’ll pick up this year, but there’re bound to be a couple, at least!

Your replies to me don’t get emailed, I come back to see them. But I don’t mind. I like visiting!

My old skill that I am going to try and work on is not new but renewed, that is getting my voice back in shape and practicing my lost art of piano playing. I have so let that skill fall by the way side. I know it is not a housekeeping skill but I am also going to try and finish us a quilt I started when I lived in Utah.
