opening stuck jar lids

Grandma dealt with this problem on a regular basis. Home canned jars are notorious for being hard to open. That’s because in the home canning process, canning liquid often gets sucked up into the lid area and dries.

But even a store-bought jar can be hard to open.

1. Is there a man/and/or/teenager with big, strong hands around? If so, ask him to open the jar. This will make him feel good about himself.

2. Get traction. Wrap rubber bands, (the kind that come on broccoli work well) around the lid to give it some grabbyness. A piece of rubbery shelf liner works too.

The Damsel has even heard of a person using a mouse pad. He got the lid open and also felt happy that his mouse pad actually did something useful.

3. Run hot water over the lid area. This not only loosens any dried stuff, but expands the metal a bit so it will let go of the glass a little easier. The Damsel saves this one for last because once the jar is wet, everything is slippery.

4. There are other ways, like prying around the lid with a spoon or can opener to lessen the vacuum. Some folks hit the jar with things; others hit the jar against things. People even stab the lid with a knife, thus relieving the vacuum. This gives the Damsel an uncomfortable feeling inside.

Let’s not open that can of worms.

I buy the large glass jars of artichoke hearts from Costco (mmm delicious on salads) and they’re impossible to open. So yes I go after the lid with a knife, stabbing it viciously, then it opens quite easily!!

Did you get your jar open? Pasta without artichokes would be way too sad.

Hey thanks for visiting my blog, it’s always nice to have new friends drop by!! I have a special little tool I use to open stubborn jars, of course only when the manly husband isn’t around!

I must confess, I hit the edges of the lid with the back of a knife to distort it a bit and pop the lid off. I used to pry it, but I stopped after the time I broke the jar and ruined a perfectly good thing of pickles. I may try the rubber band trick sometime, it sounds neat (and less violent).

Good stuff, Damsel. I have to say, as the designated jar-opener in our house that using a knife around the edges to break the seal has never failed me.

Thank you Ms. Damsel! We didn't have artichoke hearts on our pizza last week because we could not get the Costco jar open. We tried, man and woman of the house together, gripper pad on lid, and boiling water on lid. It didn't budge. It's pizza night again and I found this page. It was the broccolli rubber band that did the trick, woman of the house turning lid, man of the house firmly holding jar. Worked like a charm.

Oh, so glad to hear the pizza was saved. Whew!

Mom, we tried all of the above on the costco jar to no avail. In frustration, I tapped a small hole in the jar with a nail, heard the shhhh of escaping air, and simply opened the jar with a modest twist of the lid. My wife transferred the contents to another air tight container. Once before, my wife took it back to Costco and asked them to open it. The guy told her that they received a lot of complaints about removing lids from the large artichoke jars.
