Mom, we tried all of the above on the costco jar to no avail. In frustration, I tapped a small hole in the jar with a nail, heard the shhhh of escaping air, and simply opened the jar with a modest twist of the lid. My wife transferred the contents to another air tight container. Once before, my wife took it back to Costco and asked them to open it. The guy told her that they received a lot of complaints about removing lids from the large artichoke jars.

Thank you Ms. Damsel! We didn't have artichoke hearts on our pizza last week because we could not get the Costco jar open. We tried, man and woman of the house together, gripper pad on lid, and boiling water on lid. It didn't budge. It's pizza night again and I found this page. It was the broccolli rubber band that did the trick, woman of the house turning lid, man of the house firmly holding jar. Worked like a charm.

Did you get your jar open? Pasta without artichokes would be way too sad.

Good stuff, Damsel. I have to say, as the designated jar-opener in our house that using a knife around the edges to break the seal has never failed me.

I must confess, I hit the edges of the lid with the back of a knife to distort it a bit and pop the lid off. I used to pry it, but I stopped after the time I broke the jar and ruined a perfectly good thing of pickles. I may try the rubber band trick sometime, it sounds neat (and less violent).

Hey thanks for visiting my blog, it's always nice to have new friends drop by!! I have a special little tool I use to open stubborn jars, of course only when the manly husband isn't around!

I just saw that you visited Mama's Little Chick! I hope to see you around! I tell you, my wrists are bad so opening a jar has become quite a process. I like your blog!! Have a great weekend!
