What a week! What a month.

The Damsel has been asked to speak at two different writing conferences, and after she got past the shock, she realized she had a lot to do. Speaking is a new and different thing for the Damsel. There’s no delete button, no thinking it over and then revising.

The first event happened yesterday and the Damsel is pleased to report she did not throw up.

The topic was “mastering the fundamentals” and although the Damsel was talking about creative writing, it applies to nearly every aspect of life. Including, or perhaps even especially, learning basic, “old school” skills to take care of your family. In fact, it suggested to the mind of the Damsel a possible series of posts for this site: identifiying and teaching those skills that would be “fundamental” in becoming more self reliant.

So stay tuned for that. In the meantime, the Damsel is recovering nicely from her foray into public speaking, thanks to the Old School skill of huddling under the feather comforter with nice dark chocolate at hand. The twitching has nearly subsided.

I am one of those rare people who enjoy speaking in public. Don't get me wrong, I stress out about it, but ultimately I totally enjoy it. I have learned that the better prepared I am for it, the better it goes. I usually prepare more than I need, and than cut out what I need to during the speech. That way, I can adjust to my audience and their needs. Good luck. I totally think you will be great at this!!

I'm button-popping proud of you! Wish I could have been there! I remember one time being totally freaked so bad when speaking to an imposing audience that my mouth was desert-dry and my tongue felt like a bristle comb. I think you were there.

You were awesome Mom!! I am not a writer and even I was totally captivated by it! You are a great speaker.

I can totally relate and tell you from back in the crowd – way to go! Sorry I wasn't there, I bet I'd have loved hearing you in person. Your writing style is fantastic, I'd listen to you any way you communicate. You have a great way of expressing ideas and I can only imagine how great you were in person.
But please don't ever ask me to get up in the front of more than 8 people. Hats off to those who can! I'll bet you were wonderful.
